Hope

Two separate events occurred yesterday morning that touched my
heart and gave me reasons to believe again. To believe not
only in the possibilities an emergence of a New Nigeria but
also that this will happen in my time and the change will
be quick. Soon we will forget that there was ever a time
when corruption ruled our country.

Today is not the day to point fingers and lament about all
the things that have gone wrong. It’s not the time to feel
sorry for our country, rather it’s a time to be grateful for
the great things that are happening amidst so much wrongs.
I will start with the first event which has made headlines
on all major newspapers and which I’ll say will send shivers
down the spines of all those who will share a similar fate.

The headlines for the Punch Newspapers yesterday read,”Bode George
Jailed”. I was shocked. Bode George, a former Chairman of
the Nigerian Ports Authority and Chieftain of the ruling
PDP jailed? How could this be? His supporters where already
dressed in colorful attires awaiting the celebration only
to hear the judgment that changed the tension soaked
atmosphere.

I must commend Justice Joseph Oyewole for his courage in
delivering this landmark judgment that will change the
perception that corruption will always go unpunished in
our country. The Judiciary has restored the confidence of
the Nigerian people and also reassured us that there is
indeed hope if we can trust the system and persevere.

The second incident happened yesterday. My boss (Adeolu Akinyemi)
was stopped by members of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) for
the second time in two months. He had all the documents they
requested for but the car was detained when they alleged that the
driver’s license was fake. In 5 minutes they produced the Road
Safety officer who helped in producing it who attested to the
authenticity of the license. They still detained the car and
deflated the tyres for reasons best known to them.

Six Hours after this event, my boss sent an e-mail to the Executive
Governor of Lagos State Babatunde Fashola narrating the entire event
to him. This morning he got a reply from the Governor who apologized
and gave insight into steps that he has taken to curb the excesses of
security officers. He copied his special adviser on Transport who he
asked to look into the matter and he assured Deolu that the matter will
be looked into.

These events point to one fact, things are changing for the better.
Do we have more Fashola’s and Oyewole’s in this country? I believe
we do. If you still doubt the change that has come upon our nation,
think again. There is hope for us as a people. Time is running out
for looters and corrupt Government officials.

God bless Nigeria.
