Choices

Its the beginning of a new year. I see this as an opportunity for
a new beginning. There are things I did in 2008 that I believe I
have an opportunity of doing differently this year. When I look
back and evaluate the events that took place last year, I
discovered that a lot of things could have been done differently
if only I had made a different choice.

The truth is that, the outcome of any event is determined by the
choices we make. First you make the choice and then the choice
makes you. We are a product of the decisions we make. The
average human being makes a lot of decisions in a day. You
decided when to get up from your bed today, you decided what
to wear, what to eat, if you wanted to go to work or not and the
day has only began. In the course of the day, a lot more decisions
will be made.

Our ability to make choices make us human and gives us freedom.
When an individual makes a series of wrong choices and thereby
commits a crime, his freedom to make decisions is taken away
from him. He is locked away in a prison where almost all decisions
are made for him. When to wake up (there is a wake up time),
what to wear (He has a uniform), what to eat, when to eat, and
almost every other decision is made for him.

This is why we must make the right decisions, not for ourselves
alone but for everyone around us who our decisions might affect.
I watched a program, 24. The first season saw an Agent, Jack
Bauer, make many decisions under pressure. He had to make a
choice of following protocol and loosing his family or breaking
the rules and saving his family from terrorist who were plotting
to kill his family and assassinate a presidential candidate.

There are times when we are faced with making difficult choices.
I once had to make a choice that would affect my relationship
with someone very close to me who I felt made a mistake in his
judgment and assessment of a situation. I had to make it quick,
stand for what is right or watch the moment pass by. I made that
decision and it changed my life forever. I will talk more about
what happened at another time.

What choices are you faced with today? I believe that you have
an opportunity to do the right thing, not looking at the short term
but at the long term. In life, we do not see so far into what lies
ahead. However, as we approach the future, a lot is uncovered
before our own eyes. We have a choice to make this year our
best year yet, lets seize the opportunity.
