Ajegunle... 2025

Yesterday I had the opportunity of spending sometime with
the Program Manager’s of Paradigm Initiative ‘Ajegunle.org’
on their orientation ceremony for the new batch of 50 young
people who are being trained in basic ICT skills and
entrepreneurship. Its an interesting program that aims at
empowering the youths in Ajegunle to be able to confront the
challenges of everyday life especially in a place like Ajegunle.

The first thing that comes to your mind when the name Ajegunle
is mentioned is a slum, poverty and crime. But more than what
you’ve heard and what seems to be associated with Aj city is that
the people especially the youths desperately look forward to the
reality of a better day. They are not just paying lip service to it,

A Will to Succeed

certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty
and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The words above are an excerpt from the words of the United
States Declaration of Independence. It’s self explanatory and
states the basic things that we as human beings seek for. Every
one wants to live more and express his or herself freely, be free
to do anything and pursue any dream or aspiration. These are
noble and legitimate aspirations as long as there are no negative
intentions.

Know Thyself

It could arguably be described as the greatest Disney animated
movie of all time. A family drama, that was funny, emotional
and had great animation and songs that got families all over the
world glued to their TV sets. The Lion King was an animated
film watched by almost every home which has loads of lessons
for us to learn. I will like to point out something I learnt from
this movie or Animation.

Let me just do a quick recap of the story line so that we are on
the same page. A young lion prince, Simba is born in Pride Rock,
thus making his uncle Scar the second in line to the throne. Scar
plots with the hyenas to kill King Mufasa and Prince Simba, thus
making himself King. The King is killed and Simba is led to believe
by Scar that it was his fault, and so Simba flees the kingdom in

Choices

Its the beginning of a new year. I see this as an opportunity for
a new beginning. There are things I did in 2008 that I believe I
have an opportunity of doing differently this year. When I look
back and evaluate the events that took place last year, I
discovered that a lot of things could have been done differently
if only I had made a different choice.

The truth is that, the outcome of any event is determined by the
choices we make. First you make the choice and then the choice
makes you. We are a product of the decisions we make. The
average human being makes a lot of decisions in a day. You
decided when to get up from your bed today, you decided what
to wear, what to eat, if you wanted to go to work or not and the
day has only began. In the course of the day, a lot more decisions

Staying Up in Down Times

Without a doubt, the economic situation in the World and in
Nigeria which started last year will certainly continue. We can
not overlook the fact that there is an economic down turn. The
major economies of the world are fighting hard to make sure
that their economies are up and running. All the avenues where
people invested their money and put their hopes in have all gone
down.

In Nigeria for example, it was the stock market. A lot of people
put their money in the stock market. The clear direction for last
year in the market was the same as in most parts of the world,
down. Individuals and banks lost a lot of money anticipating that
things were going to remain the same. Those who put their trust

2008 in Retrospect

The year 2008 was a great year. A year filled with many ups
and downs. A lot of events made this year special, and I’ll like
to go through a few of them. We all started this year with a lot
of expectations, we had goals and objectives that we wrote
down. This is a good time to review these goals and see how
much we were able to achieve.

In 2008 we saw the economies of the world crumble into recession.
Great nations like the United States, the United Kingdom amongst
others all suffered a global financial crisis. Stock markets crashed
and investors counted their losses. Individuals lost their jobs and big
corporations filed for bankruptcy. Government of these nations
struggled to keep their economy afloat by bailing them out of their
