Gabriel Mordi : A Glorious Life cut Short.
As I read the papers today, a very sad story caught my
attention. It is a painful and heartbreaking story that I think
should re-awaken the need for national re-orientation and a
change in the Nigerian system. The public sector in Nigeria
has to be overhauled and the need for excellent service
delivery must be emphasized. It is a tale of an economy gone
bad.
Gabriel Mordi is a 23 year old Public Administration graduate
of Madonna University Okija. He graduated with a second
class upper and just got a job in Zenith Bank. He was on his
way back to Asaba, Delta State from Lagos in the company
of two young men who offered him a lift from Lagos to break
the good news to his parents when the car he was in was
stopped by policemen at a check point. Before the car could
stop, there was a shot from one of the policemen.
When the car came to a final stop, Gabriel discovered that he
had been shot by the police at a checkpoint in Agbor-Delta
State. On noticing this, the policemen ran to their car and sped
off. The two young men then rushed Gabriel to the hospital
where he was refused treatment by the hospital on the grounds
that they had to get a police report. Gabriel was still full of life
at about 6:30 p.m and alerted his mother and she immediately
got on the road and headed for Agbor from Asaba which is 45
minutes away.
The two young men got the police report but Gabriel was still
refused treatment until payment could be made. His mother
arrived at the hospital and pleaded for Gabriel to be treated,
this was turned down by the hospital authorities. She had to
return to Asaba to get money for the treatment. Gabriel was
rushed into the theater at 11 pm, more than 6 hours after the
incident. He died at 1 am………………….
At this point, lets reflect on two issues here. First of all, the
policeman mistakenly shot Gabriel, if that was the case. Instead
of taking responsibility and helping the two young men take
Gabriel to the hospital, they ran away leaving Gabriel in the
hands of the two young men. We must learn to take
responsibility for our actions. We must learn to be socially
responsible. Their actions caused Gabriel his life.
Secondly, the hospital authorities were very inconsiderate.
They disregarded the plea of a loving mother and watched an
innocent man die in their arms. Could he not be treated first to
save his life before the monetary demands were met. What kind
of a system is this? It is a system designed by evil and
inconsiderate people failing to consider unforeseen circumstances.
I do not know Gabriel, However we have to come together
to fight for what is right. Lets do everything we can to make
sure that this does not happen again to any innocent life out
there. The police and the military should stop unjust killing of
innocent citizens. The hospital authorities should save lives first
before asking for money in such emergencies.
If Nigeria will ever be the most desirable nation to live in, there
must be peace and stability. Lives and property must be safe
and all facets of the economy must work. This includes the police
who are supposed to save lives and property and the hospitals as
well.
May the soul of Gabriel Mordi rest in peace.

Nicely done…one day…they will learn
shocking… unsettling… disturbing… i cant seem to get the words to qualify how to describe this incident of how a life can be treated so cheaply.
@Ogho… thanks for shouting out, becos if we hear or see things like this and do nothing about it, who knows where this country will end up… it is with a deep concern and heavy heart, that i will say i want to still believe change is coming.
@gabriels mother; if she gets to read this… i pray God gives you the fortitude to be able to bear this unwarranted loss.
I am not really surprised at the attitude of the people at the hospital. It just confirms that Nigerians still don’t value life. What is money compared to the life of the young man that was cut short? Anyway, let us keep challenging the status quo and create the Nigeria that we desire. Like a friend normally says, let’s create the NIGERIA that we will all believe in and not the one we will be leaving.
Keep up the work bros
Its high time we speak out and fight against a system that is anti people and life.
Thanks for that!
In an unjust society silence is crime. This can happen to anybody, there is enough noise about beating and striping naked of a powerful man’s daughter. Who is speaking for this defenseless, unharmed young man. Let’s speak out against injustice.
Ogho good job.
Hello Ogho,
Thanks for writing about this, what a sad and painful story, too many of this kind story have happened until now, may the soul of the departed rest in peace and God to grant the mother and family the fortitude to bear the loss.
Now to Nigeria system and the seemily useless government we have, Yaradua claims to have priority for the rule of law, i wonder where is human rights law in this regards. The point of focus is that we need to shout till our voice is heard, the government need to review the stupid and dumb law that has no flexible about hospital giving treatment for some cases before any police report, talkless of their heartless behaviour putting importance on money ahead of saving life.
I’m sure despite the death of this guy, that hospital will still collect money, anyway who should i blame the hospital is in business for money, i guess it is a private hospital. all the senate and house of representatives are interested in is buying cars with million of Naira at ridiculous inflated prices, yet there is no money to give free health. Infact, my heart bleeds for Nigeria. I believe there is hope, i refuse to lose hope, i see possibilities of a radical change but we young people need to come together, let’s hold summit and discuss way forward, we must act now, JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY IS FAST APPROACHING, what development are we going to see by then, we can effect a positive change.
Ogho,
Can we get New Nigeria Club members to help us circulate a letter in their communities and areas, that if anybody comes to the hospital with a life and death matter and does not have money to pay at the moment, that We, the New Nigeria Club will pay?
I think we need to convert our emotions to action, this will happen again. I know of one like this that happened 4yrs ago, to a young man that was a manager with KPMG. He had 100 times the money his account, but they wanted him to pay first. He died!
If we can get our 3000+ members and the 100,000 others that we have access to to help us deliver this letter in the hospitals. All the hospital needs to do is get the person to sign our letter of indebtedness to New Nigeria Club, and take as small as a camera picture. We will pay, even if the parents do not eventually pay us.
This is something we can call the responsibility of Government, but let’s govern ourselves, we’ve called it Government of the people by the people.
Let’s work out a process on this, and let all who comment, join us in this effort. No New Nigeria without New Nigerians.
Welldone Ogho, let’s cure the land of this menace.
It is pathetic ……… I weep without losing hope for this country that I know a lot of us love so much.
We have a voice and it may look like they are not hearing it but we know they are………….
Ogho, thanks for speaking out……when we speak out, cos nature abhors vacuum, someone must hear and as we keep speaking someday very soon, something will shake and if it refuse to shake, we will shake it.
are the government officials listening or reading all this thing that are happening in this our ghospol land? and if they they do what is their reaction toward these things pls we should enter into prayer, for God to come to our rescure.
they should be good conduct in between the civil and public servant, them the code of conduct should take it due cause.
Finally, the police men on duty are supose to drag to court of law. Thank you i’ll be waiting to hear more about this story.
ABUBAKAR J. A-SADIQ
Hmm…it is indeed a very heart rending story.
The police force needs an overhaul……
I believe true change will begin when people have been pushed to the wall and have no other way to go than fight back against an unjust system.
Welldone Ogho.
……heart-rendering indeed & an unfortunate one. I have had bitter past experiences with the nigeria Police & i must confess ‘i hate them with passion’.
It wont help in anyway though….
They r bunch of animals in human skin with exception of minute few reasonable ones…
C d disgrace the naval officers plunge our ’struggling’ image…on a hapless lady!
It’s nauseating
Me think it’s high time Graduates be encouraged to join the force @ least… otherwise am sorry….
@ Adeolu. Yes it a great idea. God bless! but beyond this…….
@ Emore, well done too!
What another sad story again? May the soul of Gabriel rest I peace. But I tell you, the police man who ran away from taking full responsibility for their action will not find peace. I wonder what will now be going through the minds of those doctors and nurses who refuse to give help when it was dearly needed. This goes to tell us that some of us value money more than life.
Hmmmmm……
Where do we go from here…how many lives would be lost due to wickedness,
When would this end….accidental discharge………hospital negligence…..I can imagine what the nurses were doing, seeing the boy bleed to death…..
What more can we sa?……
Good luck Naija…….
It is disheartening to hear this type of news again in this country.
we have embibed democracy and people are being murdered.
This matter must be discussed at the national assembly, the family must take this matter up with the reps.
though the soul cannot be recovered but there should be caution, reprimand, to avoid future occurence. Who could be the next victim?
This is BRUTAL.
This has gone on for to long and it has to stop. Thanks for the speaking out
Ogho, that was a nice but sad one you gave Nigerians. No right thinking Nigerian would after reading this story, find it appealing. But the question Nigerians should be asking isn’t about the values of the Nigerian police force personnel or the nurses and doctors in our hospitals today, which is greed for money at the expense of a fellow citizens life thereby neglecting their responsibilities of protecting and keeping lives safe for the pursuit of their pockets and comfort. But the question we should ask ourselves are:-
1. Who’re our leaders?
2. What are their responsibilities?
3. Whose responsibility it is to ensure that these failing sectors work positively?
4. Does this responsibility cut across each and every one of us(Nigerians)?
5. Is there a better time than now, when we Nigerians and Nigerians in diaspora, irrespective of our differences in status, ethnic heritage, religion, Geo-political locations etc put aside every division.
These factors may have impact on us and with collective responsibility, create a better Naija for us all. We can all see that more of these problems are being acquired and accrued on a daily basis. Thus, the negative effects of our attitude continues to get on us as it piles upwards until infinity except something is done urgently. Let’s all unite to make our country Nigeria the most desired country in the world and abort such mischievous situations from ever reoccurring in this country ever again. May the soul of the departed rest in the bosom of the Lord. Good job Ogho.
