Multi Level Marketing in Nigeria
The name and the concept of multi level marketing will be received
with mixed feelings by different people. Multi Level Marketing in
plain English can be described as marketing on different levels other
than a single person working alone. There are a lot of programs out
there that have made the concept of multi level marketing in Nigeria
a restricted area because of their experiences with such programs.
I will try as much as possible to explain the benefits attached to multi
level marketing as well as the misconceptions that have been
associated with multi level marketing in Nigeria. There are two major
aspects of multi level marketing, the product and the reward system.
Any multi level marketing program that is not backed up by a product
is a ponzi scheme. This is the first step in identifying a credible program.
A lot of people were cajoled into joining most multi level marketing
programs like Club Freedom, Getaway Club and other programs
believing that they could earn rewards without actually doing any form
of marketing. They were made to believe that it was some sort of
investment where you put in money and get outrageous returns like a
high yield investment program. This misconception made a lot of people
have the wrong idea about multi level marketing and they began to run
away from it.
I believe that the concept should be properly explained to individuals
who intend to be a part of a multi level marketing program. The product
of any multi level marketing program should be credible and sustainable.
This will go a long way in restoring confidence and ensuring transparency
in multi level marketing programs.
Multi level marketing will bring about a revolution in the Nigerian
economy. Let’s take Independent Field Advertisers (IFA) for example.
IFA is an insurance firm based in South Africa that sells life insurance.
They adopted a Multi Level Marketing approach in their structure. The
results speaks volumes. They have two million policy holders in South
Africa. They have sold 200,000 forms in Nigeria in two months of their
existence here. Life insurance is not a product anyone would like to sell,
however they have achieved a lot and exceeded the norm in Nigeria.
Very few Insurance companies can boast of 10,000 policy holders in all
their years of existence here in Nigeria.
We are all involved in Multi Level Marketing in one way or the other,
only that we do not earn from it. Nigerian’s have very strong social ties
and are connected to each other in such a way that our social system
supports multi level marketing. A friend of mine got a very beautiful
jacket. He wore it to the office and told everyone in the office about
the guy that made it. The guy ended up making suits for everyone in the
office.
The moment the banking, telecoms or any other major sector of the
economy takes up multi level marketing in its structure, the public will
begin to see it from a different perspective. Malaysia for example has
well over 625 MLM companies. Unlike Nigerian’s, the Asian’s are shy
yet they have such a high number of multi level marketing programs.
This is an indication that if proper structures are put in place, multi level
marketing could become a distinct industry like every other industry in
Nigeria.
One of the ills of Multi Level Marketing is that people get carried away by the
rewards that they replicate themselves in order to outsmart the system. Multi
level Marketing helps you to increase your network and leverage if properly
utilized. There are tons of opportunities in the Multi Level Marketing industry.
The experiences gained so far from Multi Level Marketing could be used as
a model which can be adopted by multinationals to help them with marketing
their products. Emerging companies like Etisalat who are getting into a
competitive industry could use a multi level marketing approach like IFA which
has shown that the results are often greater than normal advertising. Facebook
uses a referral based structure. Someone said, the best form of advertising is
the word of a friend.

Ogho,
Thanks for this article. However, I think MLM cannot work without leaving many behind. Even the so called successful models i believe you will refer to have many left behind.
I suspect that there is another model which can stand the test of time better than MLM as it is.
Let’s keep searching for better models, the MLM model is fundamentally flawed as a business model.
Waoh! This is really good. I was once asked that what could be done to solve the problem of unemployment in Nigeria and i sail Multi Level Marketing. I must confess, i sounded stupid and unsure to a certain extent but with this write up, i am doubly sure of it potency and effectiveness.
I think people need to be properly reoriented about MLM. Most people will not touch it with a long pole. Some actually believe they can’t do it. But i have come to understand that it takes consistent practice to be good at the game aside from the fact that it builds you up personally. It brings out the stuff you are made off.
I think i am writing too much, final take, Definitely a good piece!
Cheers!
talking about MLM i think you should look back to your firm. we as nigerians often would follow someone we know not because we trust them to suceed or to do the right thing but just because we want to see and know they are about. if we AS members of the public want to try out MLM i think the people who encourage us should start in that light. let us become nigerians that our words are our bonds.if we actually believe the it is a good and beneficial industry let us start by joining hands with people that see a new nigeria. let us change the faces of our movies. let us build a network the cannot be broken.we must understand that for every odd there is an even but against all odds we must survive but we have to put behind us our fears and face the challenges of today.
Well said my brother, i absolutely agree with your explanations, you have simply wrote the truth in my own opinion. Multi level marketing is one structure i believe can inject a positive revolution into Nigeria economy if well structured , honestly and properly managed, any industry can employ it to drive their market. Thanks for this piece.
Well documented piece here Emore, but lets leave out the comments and face the real Koko here…there is a clause to the success of this model. I think we need to start from there, how can MLM be well documented to suite the peculiar case in Nigeria?….lets leave the success story of other countries or companies outside Naija shores…
What can we do that will be adaptable and applicable to Nigeria?….suggestions are welcomed…I forward mine soonest.
Cheers
Emog, you made a very big point here.
I am very much in support of word of mouth.
If I could call it affiliate business, then I would say
it really the best way to improve business speed.
Keep the good work.
for the company adopting it as the means of getting it’s customers to know and buy its product it is faster, a lot cheaper that advertising and more effective. this is true with the examples of facebook, IFA and others you mentioned
for the individual taking up the job, he is employed, he is his own boss, he can make as much as he can see. life is good
that makes MLM good, A perfect win-win situation. Nothing like it
MLM vs PONSI Schemes that is another issue. How do we identify, how do we differentiate what are the key elements that separate each. If we say MLM is good, Ponsi is bad then we need to be able to separate good from bad so as not to experience the ugly. Some of us have already and it was a bitter experience that shouldn’t happen again.
I hope you’ll have answers in your next article
I will look forward to that
Emore,
Nice one.
I am an advocate of education in MLM.
For the past 2 years I have grown gray hair telling Nigerians exactly what you have written here. But, like in everything we “Nigerians” do, the quick fix option is always “better”.
I wish there was a bigger forum to pass this message on.
Unemployment, Banditry and other negative issues about finances in our society today can be addressed if the so called “big boys” in MLM in Nigeria really educate instead of what they are currently doing.
People who have eyes to see are already flying with MLM and their team members are doing the same while in other cases team members are weeping.
