The Power of Creativity

I heard a story about a little boy who happened to be visually
impaired. There is so much I learnt from this story and I would
like to share it with you. A blind boy sat on the steps of a building
with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind,
please help.” He sat like that for quite some time expecting to get
some money from passers by who would be compassionate and
hand him some money. There were only a few coins in the hat
after about three hours.

Then a young man was walking by, he saw the young lad and
had compassion on him. He took a few coins from his pocket
and dropped them into the hat. He took a second look at the
boy and the sign and he got an idea. He then took the sign,
turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He put the
sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new
words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people saw the new
sign and were giving money to the blind boy. There is nothing
as fulfilling as seeing a person smiling and even more fulfilling is,
knowing that you are the reason behind it. That afternoon after
an hour, the man who had changed the sign came to see how
things were going. The boy recognized his voice and asked,
“Were you the one who changed my sign this morning?”.
z”Yes” the man replied. “What did you write?”

The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but
in a different way.

“I wrote “Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.”

There is a central message in both statements, the boy is blind.
However they both say the message in two different ways that
has a completely different appeal.

The first sign simply said the boy was blind. However the second
sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. This
explains why the second sign got the attention of people. He
lightened up peoples day by pointing out the fact that they could
complain about not having enough money or not having money at
all instead of thanking God that they could see the money and go
out there, work with their hands and make money.

That instead of complaining about the rain or the sun, they should
rather thank God for the ability to see these beautiful pictures. He
gave them another reason to be thankful, excited and grateful to
God for the ability to see this great day.  The man who changed the
sign tells me to think in more ways than one on how to do things
differently and also be more result oriented. In other words I have
to be creative and innovative. I ought to think differently and positively.

There are times when things won’t go our way, those are the times
to be positive and thank God for the things that are going our way.
The events that occurred in the past are only meant to shape us into
who we are now, there is no need dwelling on past mistakes or
things we cannot change. We start each day expecting greatness or
something great to happen in our lives, we however end that day with
an experience. More important than the expectation is the experience
and what we learn from it.
