Our Education System

I went out for a meeting yesterday with two of my colleagues.
We were to meet with a company to enlighten them on Shape
Cd. A product who many believe and I am sure will raise the
bar in advertising and give companies a unique edge over others
in their industry. There was light traffic on the way  so we had the
opportunity to talk about a number of things.

As we drove along, we saw a very large bill board that caught
our attention and became a subject of discussion. It was a bank
advert that had an elderly man, a woman about the same age
apparently his wife and their son. The young man was putting
on an academic gown., which meant he was matriculating. What
actually drew our attention to it was the caption that read;

“Giving your Child a UK education is priceless and attainable
Bank PHB”

At first, I wanted to understand the idea behind the advert. The
bank was advertising one of its product, maybe a new one, which
was designed to give loans to people who intended to send their
children abroad. This is a very good idea and might be born out
of the fact that a lot of people send their children abroad to school.
The intention might be to reduce the burden on the parents. This is
commendable and should be applauded.

However, could the use of priceless in this context mean that
degrees from Nigerian Universities are worthless? In the event
that they have insinuated that Nigerian Universities have no
standard and encourage families to go abroad for quality
education, what has the bank done to improve our education
system? I still ponder what the genuine intention of the advert
was.

I am left to conclude that, if you do not have a degree from the
UK or an institution outside Nigeria, then you should not be
considered for a job opportunity that may arise from these
financial institutions or any other sector of our economy. If this
is the case, am afraid a new trend which I believe will change
the standards in our education system has emerged.

Our education system must be revived. This task will not be
achieved by devaluing our schools and making the graduates of
Nigerian institution second class or next to graduates from other
schools outside Nigeria. We can not expect a miracle, to wake
up one day and we have the best schools. Deliberate efforts must
be made to improve our education system.

We should also encourage ourselves. Every individual should be
given a chance. If we believe in home grown talent and place value
on ourselves, we will be valuable to others. No one will call you a
success if you call yourself a failure. Lets place value on ourselves.

Lets make education in Nigerian schools priceless and attainable.
