Crash

It was a cool Sunday evening, yesterday to be precise. I had
closed from Church and went to see a movie. On my way
back, my friend and I decided to have fish barbecue. So we
parked and were chilling for it to get prepared. It was
prepared and we were chatting and eating, preparing for the
challenges of the week ahead.

We had certain projects we were working on and we were so
excited on the opportunities that were available and the ones
we were opportuned to take advantage of. A private placement
that we sold had just been listed; Investment and Allied
Assurance. People who took advantage of this opportunity have
a lot to smile about because they had gained a lot and it is still at
its lowest point.

All of a sudden, someone walked in and asked of the owner of
a Volkswagen Golf and a Honda Accord that there had been an
accident. I was calm and expected the worse. My friend and I
came outside and immediately rushed to the car. On getting there,
what we saw was amazing. There was a Mercedes Benz C-class
parked a few meters from my car and an elderly man sitting at the
drivers seat looking dazed.

We walked to my car and evaluated the extent of damage done,
it wasn’t bad compared to what had happened to the Volkswagen
Golf. We walked to the man and discovered he had been drinking.
After letting him cool of for sometime, he started talking and insisted
that he had a comprehensive insurance and all the cars affected
would be taken care of.

Let me try and paint a clear picture of how this accident took place.
He drove into the Golf and the Golf hit my bumper and rear light and
then he scratched the side of my car and moved for a few meters and
stopped. I knew exactly how this felt, I had been in a similar accident
before when I tried to avoid hitting someone and ran into a stationery
vehicle that belonged to an Air force officer. I knew what I went
through to get it fixed. My car was detained till I fixed his car, what I
damaged and what was damaged before were all put on my bill.

The man then asked that we call the police so that we could have
concrete evidence that he would actually fix the car. The night was
becoming long and stressful. I went to the nearest checkpoint and
spoke to the Officer in Charge. After explaining the scenario to him,
he asked me a question and I quote,

“if we follow you to the scene, what will be our take”

I was angry and frustrated at that point, and wanted to give up on the
possibilities of a New Nigeria. However, I discovered one more area
to work on. I left him and went to the main police station and reported
the case. A traffic officer accompanied us and we got back to the scene.
After evaluating, the man called his wife who came and was on her toes
throughout. She wanted to make everything right and pleaded with us to
keep the police out of it that her husband would repair our cars.

The police wanted all the cars to go to the station, I was not interested in
this after all my experiences. If they agreed to fix it or not, I would rather
fix it myself than go to the station. I spoke with the owner of the Golf and
after going back and forth a couple of times, we finally settled that there
was no need for the police. The police was a little angry having taken his
time and there was no case. We exchange numbers with the lady and
off I went after 4 or 5 hours. It was a little after mid night, all I had was
her number and her word which worked fine with me.
