Where Did we go Wrong?
With a population of over 140 million, Nigeria stands as the
most populous black nation in the world and also the largest
nation in Africa. As at 2004 we had 25 federal universities, 15
state universities and 8 private universities in Nigeria, as well
as five university centers (NUC 2004). This number has
increased over the past four years. These institutions graduate
thousands of young Nigerians every year.
These graduates then proceed for a compulsory one year
national youth service. After the service year, the real journey
into life begins. Less than 30% of this number are gainfully
employed at the end of the service year. This process is repeated
every year and the same percentage is employed each year and
the number of unemployed youths increases in geometric
